Tipping is included in your room fee. You do not need to tip.
Tipping IS actually unnecessary. However, we have found when staying at all-inclusive resorts that tipping does the same it does everywhere else: It improves the service. You will not get worse service if you don't tip but you will get more attentive service if you do. It's just human nature. Whether you chose to tip or not, the service will be exceptional.
We DO tip but not for everything and if we do, it's not huge. Generally, the only time we tip more than a buck is to the bartenders on the first night. We usually find out which bartender is going to be working during our stay in the bar that we will spend the most time in, and focus on him/her. We'll usually take good care of that bartender by flicking them $10-$20 on the first drink and Bob's Yer Uncle for the rest of the stay. A caveat to that is that we usually tip that same bartender EVERY night but not by as much, maybe it's a $5 tip at the start or just $1 per drink.. At the other bars and poolside or beachside, we go with $1 per drink. I would note that sometimes we don't have any cash on us and no-one seems to care. It may be that we took care of them at other times or they...don't...actually...care. One thing that we are, is immensely grateful and respectful of, and to, all of the staff all of the time. Being nice goes a long way. After all, everyone just wants to be respected and to have a nice life, don't they really! They aren't there to be our servants, they are helping us to have a great time by doing their jobs and we all have to do our jobs to keep that big wheel turning (Yes, we know exactly what song is in your mind right now!).
At restaurants we have tended to tip only for good service, which is a problem because usually service is always good. So, we end up tipping a couple of bucks for exceptional service instead. That means the folks who go out of their way to appear to care, smile, and be friendly.
The housekeeping staff should also be in your thoughts. We have found that a couple of bucks each day goes a very long way.
The DR runs on DR Pesos and U.S. Dollars. I suspect they prefer dollars but, it's all money. Currently, the exchange rate is 58/$1 which makes figuring out how much you are spending tricky. We just said it's 5/1 and called it a day. Basically $2 equalled 100 DR Pesos. After a few drinks in the sun, math can get foggy, so we will be keeping it simple and taking taking dollars for tipping. You will also be able to use dollars in the store on property.
We will be taking $200 in $1 bills specifically for tipping. After that, it will be the credit card all the way. We would not suggest you use a debit card for obvious reasons. We strongly believe that $200 will be way more than is necessary for tipping purposes for our 9 days. The credit card would only come out if we need cash for something or if we go on an excursion which is highly likely.
It's your call!
So, you're all done and everything is known and peachy keen. You're excited and are super excited for TBD and we're excited to see you in the DR. But, life happens and it turns out that sometimes the best plans just can't come to fruition. Total bummer. Click on the link to discover the cancellation policy.
